Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?
Bawk Bawk, Because!
We started with 6 chicks and a little curiosity, and several hundred eggs later, we still can't get enough of our fresh eggs!
Chickens weren't our only attempt at feathered friends. For a while, we raised quail and sold their eggs too… but quail turned out to be surprisingly fragile, and keeping them alive was a real challenge. We also tried our hand at ducks, and they were awesome. Lucky for us, we chose a dual-purpose breed (meat and eggs), because every single one of our ducks turned out to be a drake. Lame, but at least we had a backup plan.
Despite daily predator pressure in our yard (hawks, foxes, coyotes, and even the occasional mountain lion) we've never lost a chicken. And when we picked our breeds, yield wasn't the priority. We chose the coolest-looking chickens with the widest variety in egg colors, because honestly, that's more fun!
Our girls are getting a bit older now, and between that and Colorado's unpredictable weather these past couple of years, our egg availability can vary. We take what they give us and don't push our luck, no forcing production, no shortcuts. Just honest eggs, whenever our little dinosaurs decide to lay them.
